Various workshops on mosikaka weaving, screen printing, tapa products and presentation and developing a cultural tour as well as seminars on cultural tourism from 15-24 July are part of the second round of trainings under the Handicrafts and Cultural Tourism Support Programme funded by NZAID in partnership with Langafonua ‘a Fafine Tonga Handicrafts Centre.

Participants from Tongatapu were selected from a pool of eager participants following initial training conducted in Vava’u in May timed to help them prepare for the busy whale watching season.

“We want to train those who are serious and know that the skills we impart can actually make them enough money to sustain their families. They must have the right attitude. They must have a commitment to excellence and the drive as this will give them a differentiation advantage. I am teaching them basic skills they can work with using locally sourced materials and if the quality is there, it can earn them money,” said Sione Loseli, trainer in the 3 day screen printing workshop and the talent behind the screen print brand Smart Look.

The 5 day workshop on the traditional mosikaka weaving continues to be in high demand.

“I was so delighted when I was told I will join because I did not know anyone today knew how to weave mosikaka as it is rarely seen,” said Seini Tu’inauvai of Kolovai, one of 15 selected to be taught by mosikaka expert Lesieli Tupou.

Upon completion of the practical skills, local trainers present to each group on cultural tourism. “It is important that we all understand our roles and how our products and services can either promote or diminish efforts to give tourists a truly authentic and enjoyable experience,” says Susitina Tesi, participant in the 1 day Tourism Awareness/Customer Service seminar and long-time handicraft vendor at Talamahu Market.

A display of completed items and presentation of certificates will be made to over 60 participants on Wednesday 24th July at the Girl Guides Headquarters to over 60 participants.

The Handicrafts and Cultural Tourism Support Programme’s goal is Enhanced sustainable livelihood opportunities from tourism for artisans and cultural experience providers in Tonga.

These trainings form part of an integrated training calendar using international advisors and local experts.
