Get up early at your resort and you’ll discover Tongan fishermen selling produce they have caught that night. The fresh Octopus, Mudcrabs, Coral Trout and Lobsters will be on your menu the same day. Daily markets abound with fruit and vegetables that are sold by the growers and picked, plucked or dug up the same day they are sold. A warm climate, abundant rain and rich volcanic soil create a perfect environment for cultivation. Many Tongans manage their own small farms and grow vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots, spinach, pumpkins, taro, tapioca and onions.

Apart from hotels and resorts there are restaurants featuring traditional Tongan, German, Italian and Asian cuisines. Traditional Tongan food usually includes various meats like chicken and pork, fish and shellfish. Tongan food is traditionally cooked in earth ovens called Umu and on special occasions and celebrations a pig is roasted over hot coals. For a quick affordable meal or a cup of the beautiful locally grown coffee there are also a variety of cafes to chose from. In Tonga food is how all food should be. Harvested fresh, cooked fresh and eaten fresh.

My friend and I visited Tonga during August 2009. The friendly, generous people and their traditional way of life….so different to the rushed, stressed, modern world…. the markets, the scenery, the beaches, the shops, and the slower way of life, all contributed to a completely unique holiday.
Traffic is leisurely and contributed to the overall feeling of relaxation, and we quickly got used to not having to rush around.
We stayed with wonderful friends in their home, and were taken to some fascinating places, including the unusual Nuku’alofa Fishing Club, which we loved. Anyone wanting to unwind and find some peace only has to visit beautiful Tonga.
